Will I Lose My Teeth if I Have Periodontal Disease?

Once the teeth loosen, they can fall out at any time. It is advisable to start the treatment and care at the first stage (gingivitis) before it progresses to a severe gum disease. While treating gingivitis is easier, practicing good hygiene is always the key to avoiding periodontal diseases. Furthermore, keeping your mouth healthy will boost your social confidence.

How Long Can I Retain My Tooth With Periodontal Disease?

Teeth fall out when the jawbone starts to wear. The only periodontal stage with no bone loss is the gingivitis stage. It is the first stage when the gums turn red, swell, and bleed. In all other stages, the gums pull away, exposing the root canal to the bacteria. The bacteria starts damaging the supporting bone, exposing you to the risks of losing your teeth.

The first stage lasts only two to three weeks before the disease progresses to the second stage. So, after three weeks, you will be at risk of losing your teeth.

What Are Signs I Might Lose My Tooth to Periodontal Disease?

Before you lose your tooth, you will notice numerous signs. These signs are all related to periodontal disease, but you can see them in the final stages:

Gums Oozing Pus

You will notice pus around the gumline at the moderate stage. The pus oozes due to bacterial damage to the ligaments, soft tissues, and bones. At this stage, the root canal is almost entirely damaged.

Extremely Receded Gumline

As the gum pockets get deeper, more bacteria hide inside and continue to erode the gum tissue and bone. The root canal is weakened, so the tooth has less support.

Teeth Feel Loose

The tooth starts to feel loose at the final stage when you experience severe bone loss. After the tooth has become loose, it can fall out at any time.

Health professionals have the knowledge and equipment to identify the periodontal disease stage and start an effective treatment. Contact our dentists for booking and an earlier diagnosis.
