The Importance of Keeping on Track with Hygiene Cleanings

Posted on 3/15/2026 by Westwood Periodontics
Two dental professional working together to thoroughly clean their patient's teeth at Westwood Periodontics in Westwood, NJAt Westwood Periodontics, we see patients at every stage of their oral health journey, from those just beginning to explore dental implants to those who had their implants placed years ago and are doing everything right to protect them.

One thing Dr. Gupta consistently emphasizes, no matter where a patient is in that process, is this: professional hygiene cleanings are not optional maintenance.

They are the foundation of long-term oral health, and skipping them has real consequences, especially when dental implants are part of the picture.

If you have dental implants, or you're planning to get them, this is worth your full attention.

What Happens During a Professional Hygiene Cleaning?

A professional cleaning goes far beyond what your toothbrush and floss can accomplish at home. Even the most diligent brusher misses areas where plaque accumulates and hardens into calculus.

Calculus is a mineralized deposit that cannot be removed with at-home tools.

During your hygiene appointment, our team removes that buildup from both above and below the gumline, assesses the health of your gum tissue, checks pocket depths around your teeth and implants, and looks for any early warning signs that might go unnoticed otherwise.

For patients who have had gum disease in the past, or who have dental implants, these visits carry even more clinical weight. The interval between your cleanings is not arbitrary, it's based on your individual risk level, and Dr. Gupta will recommend a schedule that reflects your specific needs.

The Connection Between Gum Health and Implant Success

Dental implants are remarkable restorations. They function like natural teeth, preserve jawbone structure, and can last a lifetime with proper care.

But they are not immune to the effects of neglect. The tissue and bone surrounding a dental implant must remain healthy for the implant to remain stable. When that environment is compromised, complications can follow.

The most significant implant-related complication tied to poor oral hygiene is a condition called peri-implantitis.

This is an inflammatory condition affecting the gum tissue and bone around a dental implant, and it shares a lot in common with periodontitis, the same bacterial-driven disease that causes bone loss around natural teeth.

Peri-implantitis, if left untreated, can lead to progressive bone loss around the implant and, in severe cases, implant failure.

What makes peri-implantitis particularly concerning is how quietly it can develop. In its early stages, it may cause little to no discomfort. Without regular professional monitoring, it often goes undetected until significant damage has already occurred.

This is exactly why keeping up with hygiene appointments is so critical. Your hygiene visits are when we catch these issues early, when intervention is most effective.

Who Is Most at Risk for Implant Complications?

While anyone with a dental implant can develop peri-implantitis if oral hygiene is neglected, certain factors increase the risk. Dr. Gupta pays close attention to these during your visits:
•  A history of periodontal disease, which makes the surrounding tissue more susceptible to infection
•  Smoking or tobacco use, which impairs circulation and slows the body's ability to fight infection
•  Diabetes or other systemic conditions that affect immune response
•  Inconsistent home care habits, particularly around implant sites
•  Infrequent professional cleanings, allowing biofilm to accumulate unchecked

If any of these apply to you, that's not a reason to worry; it's a reason to be proactive.

Staying on schedule with your hygiene appointments gives us the opportunity to monitor your implants closely and intervene early if anything changes.

How Often Should You Come In?

For many patients, a twice-yearly cleaning schedule is appropriate. However, patients with a history of gum disease or those with other contributing risk factors may benefit from more frequent visits, often every three to four months.

This is not a one-size-fits-all recommendation.

Dr. Gupta and our hygiene team will work with you to determine the interval that makes the most sense given your current oral health status and history. The goal is always to keep you ahead of problems, not to respond to them after the fact.

Home Care Still Matters

Professional cleanings are essential, but they work best when supported by consistent at-home care.

Around implants specifically, this means brushing twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush, using floss or an interdental brush to clean between the implant and surrounding teeth, and considering an antimicrobial rinse if recommended by Dr. Gupta.

Water flossers can also be a helpful addition for patients who find traditional flossing around implants difficult.

No cleaning appointment can fully compensate for gaps in daily home care, and no home care routine can replace the professional monitoring and instrumentation your hygiene visits provide. The two work together.
