Sedation Dentistry Westwood, NJ

Dental assistant fitting a sedation mask over the nose of her calm female patient at Westwood Periodontics in Westwood, NJAt Westwood Periodontics, we understand that dental procedures can sometimes be a source of anxiety for patients. To ensure comfort and ease for our patients, we offer a range of sedation options tailored to individual needs and procedures.

This page details the types of sedation available, their benefits, and how they are administered, emphasizing our commitment to a pain-free, comfortable dental experience.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

How it Works: Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative gas that's inhaled through a mask placed over the nose. It induces a state of relaxation and is quickly reversible.

Benefits: Nitrous oxide is an industry standard due to its safety and effectiveness. The gas also allows us to easily control your level of sedation within a matter of seconds. Because it wears off almost instantly, it is one of the only sedation options that does not require you to arrange a ride to and from our office.

Reasons for Use: Ideal for patients with mild anxiety and for shorter, less invasive procedures.

Oral Conscious Sedation

How it Works: Administered in pill or liquid form before the procedure, oral sedatives create a drowsy, relaxed state. The most common medications for oral sedation include: Diazepam, Triazolam, Zaleplon, and Lorazepam.

Benefits: Patients experience reduced anxiety and may have little memory of the procedure, although they remain awake (similar to nitrious oxide).

Reasons for Use: Suitable for patients with moderate anxiety or those undergoing longer treatments.

IV Sedation

How it Works: Intravenous sedation is administered directly into the bloodstream for a deeper level of sedation. Most people who undergo IV sedation are still able to respond to stimulus during their procedure. However, you will also have little or no recollection of the procedure after the sedative wears off. Because the medications used in IV sedation are powerful, you should be prepared to take the rest of the day off after your surgery.

Benefits: Offers a more controlled and adjustable sedation level, inducing a state of deep relaxation.

Reasons for Use: Recommended for patients with significant dental anxiety, those undergoing extensive procedures, or patients with special needs.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry provides several benefits:

Reduces Anxiety: Greatly alleviates dental fears, providing a more relaxing experience.

Minimizes Discomfort: Helps in managing pain and discomfort during procedures.

Memory Loss: Some sedation methods can lead to partial or complete memory loss of the procedure, which can be beneficial for patients with severe anxiety.

Time Efficiency: Allows for longer or multiple procedures to be completed in one session, reducing the number of visits.

Administering IV Sedation

At our practice, administering sedation is done with the utmost care and professionalism. A thorough evaluation, including medical history and current medications, is conducted to choose the appropriate sedation method.

Then, throughout the procedure, the patient's vital signs are closely monitored for safety. Once the procedure is complete, patients receive specific aftercare instructions. It is mandatory to have someone accompany them home.

Do I Qualify for Sedation Dentistry?

Determining whether or not sedation dentistry is right for you involves a number of factors, some of which include:

Assessing Dental Anxiety Level: The level of anxiety a patient experiences plays a crucial role in determining the type of sedation.

Procedure Complexity: The nature and length of the dental procedure influence the choice of sedation.

Patient Health History: A patient’s overall health and any pre-existing conditions are considered when selecting a sedation method.
